Fred Varley
197 Main Street Exhibition

from June 29, 2019 to June 26, 2020

Location: Varley Art Gallery
216 Main Street Unionville  map

A studio plays an important role in an artist’s creative process. It is a space where artworks are created, but it is also an area for research, experimentation and contemplation. A studio can be an entire room, a single wall or even the corner of a kitchen table. Over time, the studio becomes a reflection of the artist and the place itself can influence the work produced within. During his career, Canada's famous Group of Seven Artist, F. H. Varley, worked in over fifteen different studios. A few of these featured prominently in his life, including his last one at 197 Main Street Unionville, now called the McKay Art Centre.

In this exhibition, F. H. Varley’s basement studio is revisited through artworks, tools and objects from the period 1957 – 1969 when the artist lived in Unionville.

Inspired by photographs of the McKay Art Centre from that time, the gallery is divided into two separate areas. As you enter, furniture, original to 197 Main Street, suggests a domestic interior. Here, works by F.H. Varley are grouped according to the studios in which they were created. Behind this space, you will find a deconstructed studio with the artist’s easel, paint palette and various works in progress on display. By evoking these settings, we can better understand F.H. Varley’s works and the role of the studio in
his creative production.

Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra's Safe Haven

 Safe Haven

Sunday, February 2, 2020 at 4 p.m.

Location: FLATO Markham Theatre
171 Town Centre Blvd.  map

Safe Haven, a multimedia creation by Alison Mackay (The Galileo Project, Tales of Two Cities) is a concert of masterworks portraying the influence of migration on the cultural life of Europe and present-day Canada. The movement of refugees across 18th-century Europe enriched both the economy and the culture of major cities.

Safe Haven explores the influence of refugees on some of the most beloved of baroque composers and celebrates the cross-pollination of art made possible by a welcoming society.

Featuring Vivaldi “Winter” from The Four Seasons, works by Lully, Corelli, Bach, and others, Ludwig van Toronto says Safe Haven “…is a jewel box of shiny, enticing treasures that unfold seamlessly over two hours. Leaving the event with a smile on your face is pretty much guaranteed….”

In 2015, Junior 'A' hockey returned to Markham when the Niagara Red Wings moved their franchise to our community. Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti greeted the team: “The new Markham Royals Junior ‘A’ Hockey Club will be joining a well-established hockey community known for producing over sixty NHL players including Steve Stamkos, Steve Thomas, Brad May, Mike Zigomanis, Cody Hodgson, Jeff Skinner, Mike Palmateer, Hockey Hall of Fame Honoured Members Syl Apps and Adam Oates. We’re confident the Markham Royals Junior ‘A’ team will carry on that tradition of hockey excellence.”
